Plant Stalkers
When the explorers visited the rainforest in 1817, there were no cameras to take pictures of the beautiful scenery. Cameras hadnÕt even been invented yet ! In those days it was important to practice drawing and painting, so you could remember and pass along what you had seen. Being true scientists, the explorers collected plants and animals and made detailed drawings of them.
They collected plants and
animals from all the different habitats : the ancient forest, the riverbanks,
the seashore, the grasslands, the mountains, the dry lands that are practically
desert and the land where the
rainforest had been chopped down and burned.
Today, you may choose your
favorite plants from <Plant Primer>.(Click on <Plants>, page down
and click on <Plant Primer>). You can browse ÒornamentalsÓ and Òfruits
and vegetablesÓ (Òmedicinal plantsÓ cannot be found on www.plant-guide.com). You will list
their botanical names on your worksheet. Then enter your plantsÕ botanical
names at www.plant-guide.com to find
their common names, habitat, size, colors and their category (evergreen or
deciduous). Then you may print
pictures of some of your plants and color them with colored pencils.
Extended lesson :
Perhaps a field trip could be planned in the Spring to ÒstalkÓ the plants and take photos.
We will have a 20 minute
online tutorial ready for Earth Day which explains the site navigation and
Lesson 5. All you have to do is project it from your computer, using your lcd.
