Re: Lesson 1

Treasure Hunt

Dear Teacher :

If you or your administrator have :
1) subscribed to Remember the Rainforest ™   (http://remembertherainforest.com/order/index.php)
2) or you are participating in a 30 day free trial, you have already received the password info you need to access this lesson.

Treasure Hunt is a challenge for students to navigate the website and search for the jaguar, the giant trees, the giant rivers, the lavender sky, etc. They will use the <Expedition Etchings> section for their search

First, you must download the worksheets and make copies :

http://playbrazil.com/Lessons/treasure_advanced.html

http://playbrazil.com/Lessons/wordsearch_advanced.html

http://playbrazil.com/Lessons/coloring_GreenGirl.html

http://playbrazil.com/Lessons/coloring_TreeKiller.html

Let them do the wordsearch while they wait for files to download.

K is for k-2, Advanced is for 2-12

Introduce lesson :

Write the urls and passwords on the board :

https://secure.playbrazil.com/rtr
ID :
Password :

http://www.googleearth.com

Tell them to refresh their browser each time they enter to see what's new. (Click the circular arrows at top of internet browser.)

Show them how to bookmark or put in favorites.

Main idea :

When the explorers visited the rainforest in 1817, there were no cameras to take pictures of the beautiful scenery. Cameras hadn’t even been invented yet ! In those days it was important to practice drawing and painting, so you could remember and pass along what you had seen.

Today we are going on a treasure hunt, searching the <Expedition Etchings> from the website  <Remember the Rainforest™> to find the items on our list. The worksheets explain the rules.

Lesson extension :

  1. When you click the small images, you will get a larger image with a description, and most descriptions are very specific about the location. Place names link to the < Expedition Map >. You may give them the url for www.googlearth.com to see what the location looks like today. If your classroom computers are slow, perhaps you can project googleearth  onto the classroom screen.
  2. Write a description of your favorite location and illustrate with maps and pictures you have downloaded.
  3. Write an adventure using your favorite etching as the location.

We will have a 20 minute online tutorial ready for Earth Day which explains the site navigation and Lesson 1. All you have to do is project it from your computer, using your lcd.
